June 25th, 2009

Swine flu is still in the news. So, we should continue to protect ourselves from this bug. I read from the news that Swine has infected as many as 1 million Americans according to U.S. health officials. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention made the 1 million estimates in a presentation to the vaccine panel. Unfortunately, the percentage of cases hospitalized has been rising. With Swine fluIt takes about three days from the time symptoms appear to hospitalization. The CDC officials made projections about flu vaccines anticipated to be accessible to guard against both seasonal and swine flu this fall.

increased sales tax rate to 9.25%

November 6th, 2008

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger proposed to raise sales tax rate to 9.25 % in Orange Country. I am glad that it wasn’t San Diego. I hate sales tax. This is a financial rescue package for the state government that includes a 1.5 percentage point hike in the state. The State of California needed to fill in the $ 11 shortage in this year’s budget. He said this is just temporary which will last in three years. This applies to alcoholic drinks, o appliance and furniture repairs, vehicle repairs, golf fees, veterinarian services, amusement parks and sporting events.

Starbucks divulged their high-priced and high-taste Clover brewing systems (photo shown) at several Seattle stores. The Clover is a complex and commercial grade coffee brewer. The Clover costs $11K, makes one cup at a time. Starbucks says the system is “one of the most significant innovations in coffee brewing since the introduction of the espresso machine” and says its introduction of the system with some small-batch beans is a “key initiative in transforming the company.”

Starbucks revealed the system at 10 Seattle sites and they will add it to sites in Boston and San Francisco in the coming months. Starbucks will sell hot and iced versions of the coffee. They didn’t release the price of the new items yet. Stores will only brew Clover drinks from a menu of small-batch beans that will revolve monthly. The VP of Starbucks Strategic Coffee Initiatives, said, “We committed to our customers that we would reinvent coffee, and once they taste coffee brewed from the Clover, we know they will want to come back for more,”
