The Best Christmas Light Display Ever

Christmas lights are a special tradition for my family that is unlike any of our other events. Though some families love to spend time putting up elaborate displays and trying to be the best on the block, we simply enjoy going around to appreciate all of the hard work these people put into their lights. Every year, my wife and I take our kids to see some of the best neighborhood displays.

This year, we marked aside a special day on the calendar for Christmas lights. The kids were excited all week long before it finally arrived. We had some Thanksgiving leftovers for dinner, set our home security alarm from SecurityChoice.com/, and set out to drive around the city. There were really two displays that we were excited to see this year, so we had plenty of time to relax and enjoy ourselves.

The first display was pretty, but wasn’t quite everything we had hoped it would be. Nonetheless, we decided it was a good warmup for the second display that was supposed to be even more amazing. When we arrived, it certainly was — there were decorations strung in the air, the tallest lit Christmas trees I’d ever seen, and plenty of general Christmas cheer! They even had a radio station playing music that corresponded to the lights. We’ll be coming back next year for sure!

New year is just two days away

New year is just two days away. The celebration of the new year is the oldest of all holidays. It was first practiced in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, the Babylonian New Year began with the first New Moon. The Babylonian New Year celebration lasted for eleven days. Moreover, in 153 BC, the Roman senate, declared January 1 to be the beginning of the New Year.
Traditionally, it was thought that one could affect the luck they would have throughout the coming year by what they did or ate on the first day of the year. It has become common for people to celebrate the first few minutes of a brand new year in the company of family and friends. Parties often last into the middle of the night after the ringing in of a new year. It was once believed that the first visitor on New Year’s Day would bring either good luck or bad luck the rest of the year. Traditional New Year foods are also thought to bring luck. Many cultures believe that anything in the shape of a ring is good luck, because it symbolizes “coming full circle,” completing a year’s cycle. Even the Dutch believe that eating donuts on New Year’s Day will bring good fortune. In the U.S. celebrate the New Year by consuming black-eyed peas. Black-eyed peas and other legumes have been considered good luck in many cultures. Cabbage is another “good luck” vegetable that is consumed on New Year’s Day by many. Cabbage leaves are also considered a sign of prosperity, being representative of paper currency.

New Year 2011 is coming very soon. It is 2 days away from now. I am kind of excited just thinking about it. I am keyed up and animated to face the new year. Well, I am hoping that there would be more opportunities and blessings from God for me and my family next year. Obviously, my life would totally be different as I welcome a baby boy on around February or March. I am excited and nervous at the same time to be mother for the first time.

My favorite animated Christmas special

My favorite animated Christmas special of all time is Charlie Brown Christmas. The reason this is my favorite is the memories I have watching this with my brothers and sister as we were growing up. It was a tradition in our house to get our baths at night, put on our Christmas pj’s and nestle around the televison. Our mother would bring us hot cocoa with whipped cream and we would watch Charlie Brown and his sad Christmas tree.

As an adult now the tradition has been carried on with my children. All the kids get a bath and usually the Tuesday before Christmas we all gather around the televison. The experience is even better now that we have saltellite television. Charlie Brown Christmas comes in so crisp and clear. This is a tradition that we will carry on until the kids leave for college. The hope is that they will have such great memories of this Christmas cartoon that they too will carry on the tradition with their own families. There is nothing better than soft flannel pajamas, hot cocoa with whipped cream and Charlie Brown Christmas on the Satellite TV. This is truly a wonderful memory of the holiday season.
