How I spend my hour

November 29, 2010 · Posted in Technology · Comment

Thanks for the post from Shad Blake

While some people go around looking for something to eat on their lunch hour, I have set up a different system. I have already prepared my food at home waiting for me each day. I take the time out of morning to do this so that I won’t have to worry about it later. I also choose to do this process so I won’t have to spend as much money as those who eat out all the time.

The main reason that I want to come home to eat is so I can watch my Satalite TV. It is not something that I usually get to do in the afternoon or evenings, so I like to make as much of it as possible during my lunch break. This little system that I have set up saves me money and time, and it is probably one of the better organizational models I have come up with.

Some might think that putting all of this effort into something like this is rather pointless. However, on this they would be wrong. I get what I want out of my lunch hour and I am able to save money. This is not to mention the fact that I get to spend this time in the comfort of my own home. Put all of that together, and I would say this is a plan worth having.

Cyber Monday Shopping

November 29, 2010 · Posted in Business, Money/Finance, Shopping · Comment

Today is Cyber Monday! Are you ready shopping online? Many people have been shopping online rather than going to the mall or stores to get their holiday shopping list done. However, online shoppers should take extra care and precautions with the risk of shopping online. There are many cyber-criminals looking to empty your bank account or steal your identity. As the Better Business Bureau (BBB) says, “The convenience and ease of shopping online has replaced the hassle of going to the store for many people — but online shopping has its own set of risks. “Taking steps to avoid the fraud online will result in a much happier holiday for everyone — except, of course, for scammers and hackers.”

The BBB’s Top 10 Online Shopping Tips for holiday shoppers:

1. Protect your computer — A computer should always the latest installed for spam filters, anti-virus and anti-spyware software and a secure firewall.
2. Shop on trustworthy websites — Shoppers should start with BBB to check on the seller’s reputation and record for customer satisfaction. Always look for the BBB seal and other widely recognized “trustmarks” on retailer websites and click on the seals to confirm that they are valid.
3. Protect your personal information — take the time to read the site’s privacy policy and understand what personal information is being requested and how it will be used.
4. Beware of deals that sound too good to be true — there are many offers online and e-mails can often sound too good to be true – beware of these offers.
5. Beware of “phishing” — Legitimate businesses do not send emails claiming problems with an order or an account to lure the “buyer” into revealing financial information.
6. Confirm your online purchase is secure — you should always look in the address box for the “s” in https:// and in the lower-right corner for the “lock” symbol before paying. If there are any doubts about a site, BBB recommends right-clicking anywhere on the page and select “Properties.” This will let you see the real URL (website address) and the dialog box will reveal if the site is not encrypted.
7. Pay with a credit card — It’s best to use a credit card, because under federal law, the shopper can dispute the charges if he or she doesn’t receive the item. Shoppers also have dispute rights if there are unauthorized charges on their credit card, and many card issuers have “zero liability” policies under which the cardholder pays nothing if someone steals the credit card number and uses it. You should never wire money and only shop locally on sites like Craigslist.
8. Keep documentation of your order — After completing the online order process, there may be a final confirmation page or the shopper might receive confirmation by email. BBB recommends saving a copy of the Web page and any emails for future reference and as a record of the purchase.
9. Check your credit card statements often — Don’t wait for paper statements.
10. Know your rights — Federal law requires that orders made by mail, phone or online be shipped by the date promised or, if no delivery time was stated, within 30 days. If the goods aren’t shipped on time, the shopper can cancel and demand a refund.

We Watch A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving Every Year

My favorite Thanksgiving special is a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. It has all of the Peanuts characters; these include Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus and peppermint patty. The episode begins with Lucy offering to hold a football for Charlie Brown to kick, he knows she is going to pull it away, but she talks him into kicking the ball and he ends up falling onto his back.

My kids enjoy the Charlie Brown special and I have recorded it for the last few years on my DVR. We always watch the special on our satellite TV from TVbyDirect.com and then we can watch it more than once and whenever our busy schedule allows.

My daughter especially likes when Peppermint Patty invites herself to Charlie Brown’s house for dinner. Charlie Brown ends up having two dinners, one is at his grandma’s home and the other is in the backyard on a ping pong table with all of his friends. Snoopy and his bird friend Woodstock set the table and then they help out with the food.

Unfortunately for Peppermint Patty and the others Charlie Brown doesn’t really know how to cook and they wind up eating toast, pretzels, popcorn and jelly beans. Patty is angry at not being served a proper Thanksgiving dinner, this episode has become a tradition in our home and we watch the show every year.
